The Federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the Wisconsin Family and Medical Leave Act (WFMLA) provide you with the right to take job-protected leave with continued medical benefits when you need time off from work to care for yourself or a family member who is seriously ill, to care for a newborn or newly adopted child or to attend to the affairs of a family member who is called to active duty in the military.
Once an employee becomes aware of the need to take leave for a reason covered by the Wisconsin and/or Federal Family and Medical Leave Act (WFMLA/FMLA) s/he should contact ASU Human Resources (HR) directly. HR will provide the necessary forms and information, as well as determine eligibility and the number of hours and paid leave an employee has available for use. FMLA/WFMLA requests are confidential and should be directed to HR only.
The number of leave hours an employee has does not affect the need to notify the supervisor and/or HR of the need to be absent due to a FMLA/WFMLA related event.
Classified employees should notify their supervisor or HR if an absence due to the same condition (personal or family illness, birth of a child, etc.) is more than three days. Unclassified employees should notify their supervisor or HR if the absence is more than five days. HR will review the request and supporting documents and will provide a response directly to the employee.
